We understand that everyone wants basketball to begin, and we know how important athletics are to our students and our community. However, because this situation involves allegations that fall under Title IX, federal law outlines a very specific process that we must follow.
Here’s what that means in plain language:
Title IX is federal law, and it requires a formal process. We do not have the option to skip steps or rush the timeline, even if we want to. We want this situation resolved as much as you do, but it must be done correctly.
The law requires us to:
• Conduct a thorough, unbiased investigation;
• Collect and allow both sides to review evidence;
• Allow time for all parties to respond and provide their own statements;
• Provide a written final determination; and
• Honor a required appeal window before any resolution can be implemented.
During this process, we are required to protect every student involved from future harassment and retaliation. The law also prohibits the district from disciplining any student before the entire process is completed. Restarting basketball now would mean violating one of these requirements and denying students the full protection of Title IX.
We are committed to ensuring the safety of our students and providing each with the due process they deserve. That means restarting basketball after the Title IX process has been completed.
